Description

Izzati Muhimmah is a medical imaging scientist who studies computer assisted diagnosis applications especially for the primary healthcare system in the developing countries. Her primary interest concerns the development of digital microscopic assessment tools on various tropical diseases. Since 2013, Muhimmah and her colleagues at Universitas Islam Indonesia received fundings from the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia for multi-years studies on developing prototypes to recognize the abnomalities of cervical cells, HER2, malaria, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. She is the lead researcher who investigates main features to distinguish various appearances of abnormal cells under microscopic readings. Ultimately, Muhimmah and her colleagues collaborate closely with the pathologists in conducting these studies.

She is also interested in the IoT aspects on medical devices. She has developed a Body Mass Index scale that integrates the digital body weighing scale, ultrasound sensor, and Android mobile phone. This project was in collaboration with INTEL Indonesia under the Galileo Board Introduction Scheme. Muhimmah and her colleagues also developed an automatics shutters on digital microscopic image acquisition. And currently, she is a team leader to develop an active vaccine carrier that maintains its chamber in the range of 2-8 degree Celcius. This project is in collaboration with PT Bio Farma (vaccine producers of Indonesia) to support their cold-chain distributions.

She received her doctorate in medical imaging from the Aberystwyth University, Wales, UK in 2007 and a master’s degree in medical informatics from the Netherlands of Health Sciences, Erasmus University Rotterdam Medical Centre in 2001.
