Informatics Graduate Students in Exchange Program at the University of South-Eastern Norway
Achmad Bauravindah, a graduate student from Pasuruan, Indonesia, recently embarked on an academic adventure in Norway. Currently pursuing a concentration in Data Science at the Master Program in Informatics at Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII), Achmad spent his second semester as an exchange student at the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN). Beyond his studies, he actively collaborates with faculty members on research projects, further enriching his academic experience.
A Partnership Born from Friendship
This exchange program stems from a collaborative agreement initiated by UII Rector and Informatics faculty member, Fathul Wahid, and his colleague, Professor Karen Stendal. Professor Stendal coordinates the Master in Digital Transformation program at USN. Since its inception in 2022, the program has provided opportunities for UII students to study abroad with financial support from the Erasmus+ European Government Scholarships. This generous funding covers tuition, living expenses, accommodation, and transportation.
Experiencing a Unique Learning Environment
Achmad noted significant differences between the educational approaches at UII and USN.
- Focus on Understanding:
At USN, the emphasis lies on comprehension and discussion rather than assignments. Classes are discussion-driven, encouraging students to actively engage and share their perspectives. - Course Schedule:
Similar to Master Program in Informatics UII, the program offers four courses per semester. However, the structure differs. At UII, all courses are taught weekly, whereas USN dedicates an entire week to a single course, rotating subjects in subsequent weeks.
This innovative approach provided Achmad with a fresh perspective on academic engagement and knowledge acquisition.
Memorable Experiences: From Freezing Temperatures to Cultural Contrasts
Arriving in Norway during winter was a challenge for Achmad and his peers. With temperatures plunging close to -30°C, Achmad and his travel companion, Amadeus Pondera, layered on all their warm clothing. Despite the biting cold, their university-provided apartments were well-insulated, ensuring a comfortable stay.
The cultural differences were equally striking. Achmad recalled seeing a fellow student dressed in shorts and light clothing despite the freezing weather—a stark contrast to his multiple layers. The casual yet stimulating classroom atmosphere was another highlight, as classmates freely voiced their opinions, fostering lively and insightful discussions.
This exchange program not only broadened Achmad’s academic horizons but also deepened his appreciation for cultural diversity and resilience. The collaboration between UII and USN continues to provide invaluable opportunities for Indonesian students to excel on the global stage.
