It’s a Wrap!

 

The two final webinar series on informatics, each entitled ‘Applied AI’ and ‘Computer Security’ was successfully carried out by The Department of Informatics, Universitas Islam Indonesia and its partnering department from various universities all over the world. It’s quite challenging to organize international webinar series, while it’s also a huge leap given by the condition during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

 

The webinar on Computer Security was also impressive. The discussion and presentation was led by M. Andri Setiawan, Ph.D. from Universitas Islam Indonesia, Dr. Weena Janratchakool from Rajamangala University of Technology, and Niken Dwi Wahyu Cahyani from Telkom University.

 

In the 4th webinar entitled ‘Applied AI’, Three Academias were performing outstanding presentations.  Izzati Muhimmah, Ph.D. from Universitas Islam Indonesia talked about Computer-Aided Pathology, while Hansung Lee, Ph.D. from Youngsan University brought The Object Detection Based on Deep Learning, and Dr. Yuliant Sibaroni from Telkom University discussed Data Science in Research Papers Relation.

 

The two were part of 4 webinar series which have been held from September to the date. Each session of the webinar was participated by hundreds of participants all over the world. If you’re missed the webinar, you can still find the recorder session in IT Solution Enablers YouTube Channel.

Webinar Series on Informatics: Information System & Blockchain

Last Saturday (19/9), The Department of Informatics, Universitas Islam Indonesia, held the first webinar series entitled “Information System & Blockchain”. The webinar, which is held in English, was made possible by the collaboration between UII Informatics and several partner universities abroad.

Dr. R. Teduh Dirgahayu, who was the first speaker among the two others, spoke about the introduction of blockchain technology through a material entitled “Blockchain Decentralized Application”. Then Dr. Raja Kumar Murugesan from Taylor’s University, Malaysia, followed suit by conveying the use of blockchain to accelerate digital transformation through a presentation entitled “Blockchain: Accelerating Digital Transformation”. Meanwhile, the third speaker, Song Wan Li, Ph.D. from Nanjing Xiaozhuang University, China, talked about information system security through a material entitled “Introduction to Access Control Technologies in Information Systems”.

The webinar, which was attended by more than 300 people from Indonesia, Malaysia, & China, was opened by the Chancellor of the Islamic University of Indonesia, Prof. Fathul Wahid, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D. In his remarks, the Chancellor said that online webinars were a way for the University to remain relevant and able to provide the widest possible benefit during a pandemic. Namely, by adjusting business models, methods, and trying out various innovations.

After a break in the middle of the event, the webinar committee slipped the introduction of the UII Department of Informatics through a video profile. To encourage participants, the webinar committee also gave prizes to 4 participants with interesting questions.

Webinar Series on Informatics #2: Data Science

Dhomas Hatta Fudholi, Ph.D.

The second event of the Webinar Series on Informatics organized by Informatics Islamic University of Indonesia and partner universities from abroad was held on Saturday (10/3). After successfully holding the first webinar series entitled Introduction to Blockchain, this second webinar focuses more on data science.

In this webinar, three academics became speakers with a theme that broadens their horizons in the world of data science. Dhomas Hatta Fudholi, Ph.D., a lecturer from the Islamic University of Indonesia specializing in data science opened the event with a presentation on a meeting of data science and design thinking. In his presentation, he said that a data engineer cannot only meet other data experts in the professional world. Instead, they will also meet many people from various fields such as design, business, and others. Therefore, it is important to master thinking methods such as design thinking.

The event continued with the presentation of a paper entitled “Towards the heart of the Machine: The Future in Artificial Emotional Intelligence” by Dini Oktarina Dwi Handayani, Ph.D. from Taylor’s University.

Meanwhile, Song Wan Li, Ph.D. from Nanjing Xiaozhuang University, China, got the last turn after exchanging the order of speakers with Dhomas Hatta Fudholi, although the theme he presented, Introduction to Data Science, would ideally be the opening act for this event.

The second series of webinars lasted up to 4 hours and was watched by more than 300 spectators from various countries. Furthermore, Informatika will still hold a webinar with the theme of network security on 17 October.

Two Lecturers of Department of Informatics UII Attended APRICOT 2020 in Melbourne

The Asia Pacific Regional Internet Conference on Operational Technologies (APRICOT) is the largest international internet conference in the Asia Pacific that is held annually. This year, APRICOT 2020 was held at the Crown Promenade Conference Center in Melbourne, Australia. This event was held in close collaboration between The Asia Pacific Network Operators Group (APNOG) and the Asia Pacific Network Information Center (APNIC) with The Internet Association of Australia Inc. (IAA) as the host. This prestigious event was attended by practitioners and academics from across the Asia Pacific.

Fayruz Rahma, S.T., M.Eng. and Mukhammad Andri Setiawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D. who are lecturers of Department of Informatics UII also attended this event.

At the APRICOT 2020 – APNIC49 conference, which was held on 16-21 February 2020, Mr. Andri attended as the staff of IDNIC-APJII (Indonesian Network Information Center – Asosiasi Penyelenggara Jasa Internet Indonesia). As a staff of IDNIC, Mr. Andri revealed that one of the tasks of IDNIC, in addition to make internet quality in Indonesia better, is to make Indonesia a “hotspot” and better known as a pioneer of the latest technology in internet, in the Asia Pacific region.

Ms. Fayruz attended the APRICOT 2020 Virtualization & Cloud Computing Workshop which was held on February 12-16, 2020. According to her, as a lecturer in the Cyber ​​System area, the workshop that she participated in was very important to deepen knowledge and improve capabilities related to virtualization and cloud computing. In this workshop, Ms. Fayruz learned virtualization from basic concepts to container and cloud technology. In addition, there were also several practices, including: virtualization with VirtualBox, virtualization using libvirt with the KVM hypervisor, clustering and virtualization using Ganeti, migrating instances from one node to another node, and so on.

Ms. Fayruz was listed as a participant who passed the selection in the APRICOT Fellowship program. Out of more than 500 APRICOT 2020 fellowship applicants, only 34 fellows were selected from 15 countries in the Asia Pacific region. Ms. Fayruz was the only fellow from Indonesia.

In addition to gaining new knowledge and skills, in this event, Mr. Andri and Ms. Fayruz can also establish relationships with academics and other Internet practitioners from various Asia Pacific countries, and share conditions in their respective countries, get motivation, and inspiration in the world of lectures or technology.

Informatics UII Visit to Youngsan University and Hanyang University

On November 18, 2019, Hendrik, the Head of Department of Informatics UII, together with Teduh Dirgahayu, the Head of Undergraduate Program in Informatics, visited Youngsan University (YSU) in Busan, South Korea. The purpose of this visit was to discuss the continuation of the Dual Degree (DD) program that has been running since 2015. Ibrahim Surya Putra and Muhammad Rizky Al-Faraizy, both class of 2013, were the first two alumni of this program. Meanwhile, two other students from class of 2015, Fairuz Shofi and Ivan Seto Adicahya, are the next in line.

Discussion with Youngsan University

During discussions with the Department of Computer Engineering YSU, Hendrik and Teduh had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Young-Gi Kim, the CEO of Wegochain, a South Korean company focusing on Blockchain-based applications and services development. At the time, Mr. Kim and his staff were about to interview Ivan Seto Adicahya, who was applying for a job at Wegochain. Alhamdulillah, Ivan is most likely joining Wegochain after completing his study at YSU next year.

During discussions, Wegochain interested in working with UII and they planned to open a branch office in Indonesia, especially in Yogyakarta. At present, the Department of Informatics UII is still in correspondence with Wegochain, to realize this collaboration. Hopefully, it will be realized soon next year.

Visit to Hanyang University

In addition to visiting YSU, Hendrik and Teduh also visited Hanyang University (HU) in Seoul as a reciprocal visit to HU’s visit to UII a few weeks earlier. Here, the discussion is more focused in the collaboration on the short-term program, such as summer and winter programs. Every year, the HU summer and winter programs are attended by approximately 2000 students from many countries.

On that occasion, HU also offered Department of Informatics UII to send its lecturers to come as visiting lecturers in the said short-term programs.

So, which one are you interested in joining? The Dual Degree program between UII and YSU? Or the short-term program at HU? All the while having the opportunity to explore further the world’s most innovative country.

Friday, October 25, 2019, the lecturers and staffs of the Department of Informatics UII visited Taylor’s University in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for some joint activities. The group was welcomed by Professor Dr. David A / L Asirvatham, the Executive Dean of Faculty of Innovation & Technology, Taylor’s University, Dr. Dini Oktarina Dwi Handayani and Ms. Norhidayah Binti Hamzah. The second activity was a research sharing session. Mr. Ridho shared insights about “From Machine (and Deep) Learning to Causal Model”, while Mr. Andri talked about “Eliciting Tacit Knowledge from WiFi Access Logs”. Aside from UII lecturers, Dr. Hamwira Yaacob from International Islamic University Malaysia also participated in this research sharing session by sharing about Neuro-Affective Computing. Sir Capt Sudhir A K Kumaren from Kambyan Network also gave a presentation about AI and drone technology.

Strengthening the Partnership between UII and RMUTT

The relationship and partnership between the Department of Informatics UII and the Computer Science Division of RMUTT is getting stronger. Last Wednesday, September 11, the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed by the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the RMUTT Thailand, and was later also signed by the Dean of FTI UII in Yogyakarta. This MoA provides an opportunity for both parties to exchange student programs, visiting lecturers, joint research, or joint conferences.

The visit to Thailand was also to escort Ms. Dwitiya and Ms. Fira as exchange students at RMUTT. Both of them are the students of Department Informatics (Year 2016) who are currently taking the Research Track as their last year study track. Last semester, they have compiled a thesis proposal about face detection (Dwitiya) and a decision support system (Fira). They will complete their final project in RMUTT for the next 3 months.

NXU Dual Degree Student Release – Students Exchange to RMUTT

On September 4 2019, seven students were released by the Head of Informatics Engineering – Bachelor Program and Dean of FTI UII to take part in the global mobility program. Abyan Fadilla Noor, Gilang Persada Bhagawadita, Lintang Digdoyo, Muhammad Luthfi, and Yudhistira Adinugraha Hutabarat, will depart tomorrow Saturday, September 7 to Nanjing Xiaozhuang University (NXU) China to attend the Dual Degree program for around 2 years. Meanwhile, Dwitiya Pradipta Alwani and  Kahfiara Krisna Selia Putri will depart on Tuesday 10 September to Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi (RMUTT) Thanyaburi for a 3-month research program.

Dean’s Advice

Mr. Prof. Hari Purnomo, as the Dean of FTI, advised the 7 students to protect the good name of religion, nation and university. Show that Muslims are good and achievement. Out there, we have different cultures. Chinese citizens are hard workers. Be careful about food too, make sure to consume only halal food and drinks. We also need to learn the language there because international language is not only English.

Head of Undergraduate Program’s Advice

Mr. R. Teduh Dirgahayu, Head of Informatics Engineering – Bachelor Program, tells that dual degree students and exchange students in previous periods have given a good impression, so this program can be sustainable. He hopes that international cooperation will increase. Take advantage of the international atmosphere that is not found here. Befriend other local and international students, do not gather together with fellow Indonesian students.Friendship with the Indonesian Student Association (PPI) is also important.
